KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A chase involving Knoxville police and robbery suspects ended in a crash Tuesday night.

The crash happened at about 10 p.m. at an exit ramp of Interstate 75 at Merchants Road.

Officers were chasing Zachary Taylor Whaley, 18, and Natasha Hill, 21.

The couple were suspects in an assault and robbery that took place earlier in the evening.

Kevin Rollins, 42, told police he was beaten, stabbed and robbed in his North 6th Avenue apartment.

Rollins said a small amount of cash and a cell phone were stolen. He told police the couple fled his apartment in a Ford Focus with a New York license plate.

About 30 minutes later police spotted the car with Whaley at the wheel. Officers Clayton Madison and Joshua Dykes saw the vehicle in Western Heights when it turned in front of their police cruiser on Fort Promise Drive.

After the suspects stopped they fled as Officer Dykes approached the car.

They drove off east on Oldham Avenue and then onto I-275 north.

The pursuit ended when Whaley lost control and the car ran off the road at the Merchants Road exit.

The suspects were taken into custody without incident.

Whaley faces charges of especially aggravated robbery, reckless endangerment, evading arrest and theft. Police say he is also wanted on a theft charge in Pennsylvania.

Hill is charged with especially aggravated robbery.

Police say the car Whaley was driving was stolen in Pennsylvania and the license plate was stolen from a vehicle from New York.
