KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Fireworks crew members behind Knoxville's Fourth of July celebration say it's going to take more than a little rain to stop this year's show.

Pyro Shows workers spent Wednesday morning putting the finishing touches on the crates of fireworks set to go off at 9:30 Thursday night. The work included waterproofing each shell, a process that is done for every show.

"It's the same system regardless of what the forecast does," said pyrotechnician Randall Heatherly.

Schedule of Fireworks Shows and Postponements

The forecast includes rain, but Heatherly says they have often faced rain.

"Some parts of the country it rains far more than it does here even, and they pop up faster than they do here, especially along the coast," said Heatherly. "We've done it several times."

The fireworks are designed to be set off in the heaviest of downpours and almost any conditions that don't put workers and spectators at risk, such as high winds.

"We definitely can shoot them in probably worse conditions than anyone would want to watch them in, really," said Heatherly.

If the skies open up over Knoxville at show time the show will go on, but lightning in the area will delay the show 30 minutes.
