MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WATE) - An employee of the City of Middlesboro was arrested Wednesday for writing forged checks from both family members and the city itself.

Carrie Gambrell, 30, is charged with 13 counts of forgery and 13 counts of theft.

According to Middlesboro police, a family member filed a complaint after Gambrell, saying she had taken several personal checks and written them out to herself with a forged signature.

The checks, cashed over a three-month period, totaled $1,315.

After police began investigating, officials began reviewing city records and City Clerk Sandra Wilson discovered several checks made out to Gambrell totaling $955.

The check had forged signatures of both Wilson and the city mayor.

Gambrell was taken to the Bell County Detention Center.
