A man suffered burns after a driver struck a gas pump causing an explosion Thursday morning in Clarksville.

It happened around 8:10 a.m. at the Exxon station located at 715 Riverside Drive.

According to a release, 57-year-old John Ward was travelling south on Riverside Drive when he left the roadway and hit a gas pump.

What caused Ward to leave the road has yet to be determined.

A pedestrian walking across the parking lot was able to avoid being struck by the vehicle, but was unable to avoid the fire from the explosion.

The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Chris Porter.

He was taken to a Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

Porter sustained severe burns on nearly half his body.

The gas station owner's vehicle also went up in flames.

An employee of the gas station told Nashville's News 2 that Ward told them he blacked out just before his car went out of control.

The incident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed.
