Smokies volunteers honored with permanent plaque

GATLINBURG (AP) - Some folks really like the Smokies and then some folks really love them.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park recently celebrated volunteers who have contributed 5,000 hours and 10,000 hours to the park. A special recognition plaque will be on permanent display, honoring the volunteers, at the Sugarlands information center.

The Park has recorded 11 individuals or groups who have contributed over 10,000 hours of volunteer service and 15 individuals who have accumulated over 5,000 hours since the inception of the program in 1970.

Their service has come in a variety of areas, including trail and campground maintenance, visitor information and field assistance to park personnel.
