MARYVILLE (WATE) - The number of new jobs that are available in Blount County continues to grow.
A new grocery store and restaurant in Maryville are bringing hundreds of jobs to the area.
It was just announced that Kroger will be building a new store along the U.S. 129 bypass, and Monday was the grand opening of the new Barley's pizzeria downtown.
The former Carmike Foothills 12 Cinema has been empty since 2012, but soon the 12-acre lot will become a new Kroger Marketplace.
"It's bringing 200 jobs to the area," said Maryville's management and budget director Kristine Tallent. "It's also redeveloping part of our commercial corridor that has been in need of redevelopment for some time."
The Kroger store on Watkins Road will be closed after the new store opens, but the 115 employees there will move to the new location, in addition to 200 new jobs.
"Kroger is committed to bringing the best products and services to the communities we serve," said Kroger spokesperson Glynn Jenkins.
Kroger officials say the new store will be double the size of their current location on Watkins Road.
Kroger is not the only business growing in Maryville.
Barley's of Maryville, located at 128 West Broadway, opened at 11 a.m. on Monday.
"This building is the former Roy's Record Shop," said Barley's General Manager Shannon Hopkins. "Randy Burleson, who owns the company, spent a great deal of time and money on renovating the building. We feel like it's turned out beautifully."
Maryville's Barley's has an identical menu to Knoxville and has also brought a lot of new jobs to Blount County.
"90 plus, right now at 92, I believe," said Hopkins. "We got a lot of local folks."
Hopkins says they are still hiring.
"We are always working on redevelopment," said Tallent. "That's something we spent a great deal of our efforts toward. This is a building block for us."
Kroger officials say the new store should be opening by 2015.
They say it will be a $22 million investment into the local economy.
