KINGSTON (WATE) – Roane County School Board members passed a budget Thursday night that contains drastic cuts.

School Board Chair Rob Jago says state cuts, the economy, and less local funding left a $1.5 million hole in the budget.

Among the cuts are academic and coaching supplements, new textbooks, and driver's education.

"It's hard to pick and choose because you get a phone call from everyone that's going to be cut," said Jago.

The alternative school survived Thursday's cuts, but the board tapped into approximately $950,000 in reserve funds to keep the doors open.

Jago warns the reserve won't be available next year.
