Campbell County education board passes budget, cuts tax increase

CAMPBELL COUNTY (WATE) - The Campbell County Board of Education passed its budget on Friday, but without funding for additional school resource officers.

The board held a special meeting Friday evening to pass the budget after an attempt on Monday failed.

The previous budget included a 5-cent property tax increase to fund additional SROs at county schools.

That increase was removed from the budget for Friday's meeting. School board officials say the budget was passed shortly after the meeting began.

Campbell County Director of Schools Dr. Donnie Poston says the board is looking into alternate ways of funding the SROs, including a grant through COPS.

Poston says that grant could potentially cover the four officers wanted for the school system if approved.
