ALCOA (WATE) - While most students in East Tennessee are enjoying the final weeks of summer break, Alcoa city school students are back in class.

Half of the students in grades K-12 started Monday. The rest return Tuesday.

The Alcoa city school district follows an alternate school calendar.

Students go to school for nine weeks at a time, then have two weeks off. Summer break is only seven weeks long.

"I like it. I think it keeps us on top," Alcoa parent Jeff Warren said. "When I was young, we were off three months and you forget a lot during those three months."

Alcoa Elementary School Principal Merna Schott says the policy is popular within the community and among the staff.

"When the system went to that calendar the school system did well with community forums, so parents and businesses could come in and ask questions and let us tweak it a little bit and make it work for everybody," Schott said.

But there are some challenges to the unique calendar.

Schott said it can cause scheduling conflicts for parents planning vacations.

"It's an effort with having those additional breaks at non-peak times to try and keep parents to take those vacations during those breaks rather than in the summer because our summer is so short," Schott said.

Still, many parents told 6 News the perks outweigh the challenges, including the more frequent progress reports.

"The way the report cards, when I was a little kid it seemed like when you got an interim report boom you didn't even get a chance to increase it. So now I think it's definitely a better way to do things," Alcoa parent Michelle Turner said.
