A Murfreesboro police officer and his wife were arrested Monday night on drug charges.
Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested Andrew Messick, 43, and Crystal Messick, 44, in the parking lot of a Murfreesboro Walgreens pharmacy after they exchanged their television for hydrocodone pills.
The couple was booked into the Rutherford County jail on one count each of simple possession and casual exchange of a controlled substance.
They have since been released on bond.
The Murfreesboro Police Department is aware of the arrest.
Spokesperson Sergeant Kyle Evans said Andrew Messick has been decommissioned and relieved of all police authority.
"Certainly it disappoints us to see one of our own officers arrested for a crime," Sgt. Evans said. "We are not going to tolerate any misconduct and we began the administrative process of dealing with this immediately."
Sgt. Evans said Messick's arrest should not reflect poorly on other officers in Murfreesboro.
"This is no way representative of the entire department," he said. "We have almost 237 police officers who come out and work hard everyday."
He continued, "Unfortunately this officer got caught up in something that the TBI had to make an arrest on unfortunately."
Messick has been employed with the department since September 20, 2010. He was assigned to the uniformed division, patrol section.
Nashville's News 2 got a look at Messick's personnel file on Tuesday afternoon.
His file included at least two letters of recognition for his professional conduct during his interactions with the public.
Messick's personnel file also includes two disciplinary actions, both involved minor car accidents in his police unit.
The most recent was in February. Messick was suspended without pay for one day in connection with the wreck.
No injuries were reported in the crash.
The TBI said it began investigating the Messicks between one and two weeks ago.
Agents said the Messicks were the only targets of the undercover operation on Monday.
The Messicks are scheduled to appear in a Rutherford County Court September 18.
