Butch Jones hits ESPN stage

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Tennessee head football coach Butch Jones didn't budge from his preseason message during a day-long appearance on ESPN Tuesday.

'When you compete in the SEC everyday is like 4th and 1 for the national championship. It doesn't matter if it's in practice (and) in competition," Jones said during an interview segment with host Chris Fowler.

Jones spent five hours at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn.

Other SEC coaches to make rounds at various television, radio and website studios were South Carolina's Steve Spurrier and Will Muschamp of Florida.

Jones was asked about expectations in his first season as Tennessee's head coach.

"I think the big thing, again is we have a very educated fan base. They understand it's not going to happen overnight. But I really am excited about this football team. Because I think we've take great strides."

The Vols open practice on Aug. 2.

Tennessee plays Austin Peay in their season opener on Aug. 31 at Neyland Stadium.
