KNOXVILLE (WATE) - An alternate route for the proposed extension of Pellissippi Parkway has been selected, the Tennessee Department of Transportation said Monday.

TDOT officials selected a west alignment shift at the southern end of the proposed extension of State Route 162 in Blount County.

The route will require the displacement of residents in the Kensington Place mobile home community.

The proposed project would extend Pellissippi Parkway about 4.4 miles from State Route 33 (Old Knoxville Highway) to US 321/State Route 73 (Lamar Alexander Highway) in Blount County.

The route was originally selected in June 2012, but an environmental impact statement showed an archaeological site was in the path, so an alternate was needed.

Two potential alignment shifts were considered and a discussion on the proposals was held in a community meeting in May 30.

Officials said they selected the west route because it was shorter and required the purchase of less right-of-way.

Using the west route will also minimize the impact on two nearby farms and a church.

TDOT says displaced residents of the mobile home park will likely be able to relocate to nearby site pads.

A noise barrier could be erected at the mobile home park.

The proposal has been submitted to the Federal Highway Administration for approval. A decision on moving forward with construction is expected by the end of 2013.

More information on the project is available on TDOT's website.
