Sevier County Rescue Squad chief steps down at emergency meeting

SEVIERVILLE (WATE) - The Sevier County Rescue Squad chief stepped down Tuesday night after questions and complaints about funding and management.

In an emergency meeting, Chief Jim Kyker stepped down, and Assistant Chief Todd Spence was elected by the squad's board of directors as the new chief.

Last month, commissioners voted to cut the squad's budget nearly in half from $90,000 to $48,000 a year.

They said part of the reduction is due to an oversight made in the 1980's when the squad's headquarters were destroyed in a fire.

Another issue is growing concerns about the squad's management. Commissioners say people are not properly trained and a property purchase was never approved.

6 News asked newly appointed Chief Todd Spence if he thinks the management changes will make a difference in future funding from Sevier County Commissioners. He said "time will tell."

In the meantime, he says the rescue squad will continue to provide services for the people of Sevier County.
