KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The owner of a Knoxville barber shop is in the hospital after being attacked during a robbery.

The attack happened around 5:20 a.m. at Glenn's Barber Shop in the Fountain City Shopping Center on North Broadway Street.

Owner Glenn Farrington usually arrives at the store early in the morning. People in the area think the two criminals probably knew that.

They speculate the attackers targeted Farrington as he was opening up the shop.

"He's been here over 40 years and he's a Fountain City staple. He's very busy all the time," says Pat Noe, who works at a nearby store in the shopping center.

Police say a man and woman followed him into the shop as he was opening up. They stole his wallet, and took the keys to his home and several vehicles.

"Very sad. I can't believe someone would do that," Noe said.

Farrington was taken to the hospital. In addition to a cut to his hand, he had to have hip surgery as a result of the attack.

"It's a very low crime area around here, especially in my shopping center," said Mark Enix, who owns Fountain City Jewelers.

While businesses like the nearby CVS have been targeted in the recent past, the Fountain City Shopping Center, rarely is. It is full of security cameras.

"I mean, it's a barber shop. He probably had very little money," Enix said, about why he's surprised about the robbery.

What happened to Farrington is a warning to others working at the complex.

"When it happens in my shopping center, it throws a red flag up for me, for sure," Enix said.

"I'll definitely be on the lookout and watch the center a little more, keep an eye on what's going on," Noe said.

The owner of the barber shop remains in the hospital. Police are still searching for the man and woman behind the attack.
