Immigration rally held in Downtown Knoxville

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Protestors gathered on Market Square for an immigration rally Monday night.

The group "Organizing for Action" was behind the event, which included a large amount of people, young and old.

Participants walked to U.S. Representative John Duncan's Knoxville office with the goal of encouraging Duncan to vote for comprehensive immigration reform .

Supporters say it's good for America and good for the economy.

One organizer said she has additional reasons to support immigration reform because she is an educator.

"The most important thing for me is to make sure that the children of immigrants who are here, they are able to also experience the American dream. To be able to go to college, to be able to be professionals to become integrated into the community," said Loida Velazquez with the Tenn. Immigrants & Refuge Rights Coalition.

The Tennessee Hispanic Chamber of Commerce says immigrant-owned businesses are bringing $850 million into the state economy.
