East Tennessee communities participate in 'National Night Out'

HARRIMAN (WATE) - Several East Tennessee communities took part in National Night Out on Tuesday.

The goal is to better relations between police and the people they patrol.

In Harriman, there was free food, live music and games.

The Harriman Police Department also took the opportunity to teach drug awareness and show off their K-9 officers.

Chief Randy Heidle said the outreach effort began seven years ago and continues with this annual event.

"We started doing a lot more neighborhood patrolling, we started doing neighborhood watch programs, a lot of things like this. We get out with the community. Get in touch with them and get to know who they are. Just feel more friendship and partnership in fighting crime in the city of Harriman," said Heidle.

Maryville and Jellico also held National Night Out events.
