MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WATE) - A suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting during a robbery attempt at a Middlesboro, Ky. gas station Wednesday night.

Leamon Ward, 20, was pronounced dead at Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital after receiving two gunshot wounds.

Officers with the Middlesboro Police Department say they received a call around 9:45 p.m. that a man was trying to rob Lee's BP on 38th Street. The caller stated that employees and customers were trying to restrain the man.

The first officer to arrive on the scene entered the store and instructed everyone to step back to safety.

Police say Ward got up, pulled out a knife, and advanced toward the officer.

Officers told Ward to drop the knife, but he refused and continued in the officer's direction, making slashing motions with the knife.

The officer fired two shots, both striking Ward.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, pending conclusion of the investigation.
