3-year-old killed, family injured in Cocke County wreck

NEWPORT (WATE) - A 3-year-old boy was killed, and 4 others were injured after a single-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 25E.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Troopers say a 2003 Mazda was traveling south when it crossed the center line into the northbound lane. The vehicle then drove into the ditch line of the lane before striking a concrete culvert.

Atorius Cody, 3, died from his injuries. Another child in the vehicle, Skylyr Cody, age 5 was also injured in the accident.

Twanna Cody, 32, and Wilma Gibson, 43, were also injured.

Only one person in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt. Neither child was restrained in a car seat. Troopers believe seatbelts would have made a difference.

Charges are pending against the driver Brandon Gibson, 19, of Newport. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.
