FRIENDSVILLE (WATE) - A deputy with the Blount County Sheriff's Office was injured Thursday afternoon while attempting to serve a warrant.

Blount County officials say Deputy Eddie Nickerson sustained a broken ankle, a gash to his head, and exposure to a chemical spray while attempting to take Joshua Hackler, 26, into custody.

Nickerson responded to 103 Hollyhock Way in Friendsville around 2:30 p.m. to serve a warrant on Hackler along with Chessica Gayheart, 27.

Officials say Hackler resisted arrest, assaulting Nickerson and knocking his pepper spray from his holster.

Hackler then sprayed Nickerson in the face.

Additional units arrived soon after, taking Hackler and Gayheart into custody.

Another deputy, Nathan Payne, was pricked by a needle while frisking Hackler and was taken to the emergency room for tests.

Both Hackley and Gayheart are charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Hackler is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia as well.
