GATLINBURG (WATE) - A North Carolina man is dead after crashing his car near Gatlinburg Friday evening.

According to officials with the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, 44-year-old James Bigmeat Jr. of Cherokee, N.C. was traveling north on U.S. 441, also known as Newfound Gap Road, when he ran off the roadway and collided into a tree.

Bigmeat's wife 34-year-old Angie Murphy was a passenger in the car.

Murphy was transported by Gatlinburg Emergency Medical Services to UT Medical Center where she is listed as being in stable condition Sunday morning.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, but officials do believe excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash.
