KODAK (WATE) - It was back to school Friday for students and teachers in Sevier County. For some the new year meant a brand new school.

The first group of students to enter the doors of Northview Academy will only occupy a small portion of the new $30 million facility.

The second floor won't be put to use this year, but Assistant Superintendent Debra Cline says that won't last long.

"We will open this year with 7th, 8th and 9th grades, and then we will add a grade each year over the next three years," said Cline.

Once the school becomes a full 7-12 grade school administrators expect at least 600 students will be there that would have attended the overcrowded Sevier County High School.

The new school will also keep these same students under the same roof for a longer period of time.

"We feel it will ease the transition," said Cline. "It will also provide an environment here so basically the children are growing into the high school"

As they grow students will have the benefit of a new performing arts center, a state-of-the-art gym and new technology throughout the building.

"We know that in today's world we need to be concerned with providing children with rich digital content as well as digital tools," said Cline.

The new school is located near the ongoing Highway 66 construction project, so some initial traffic delays could be possible.

Northview isn't the only big change this year to Sevier County schools. The district is also expanding its entire Kindergarten program to a full day.

A multi-million dollar technology upgrade is also set to take place this Fall.
