KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Advocates of wine sales in Tennessee grocery stores brought a new campaign Friday to Knoxville.

Kroger and the Red, White, and Food Coalition introduced the "Wish Wine Were Here" campaign to Bearden Kroger customers.

Customers were asked to fill out postcards urging Tennessee lawmakers to allow wine in grocery stores.

"I'm writing to let you know that I wish I could buy wine where I shop for food." the cards read. "I support legislation that gives me the right to vote on whether wine should be sold in my community's retail food stores."

Kroger officials say they took on the campaign after hearing from so many customers who told them they wanted wine to be sold in Kroger stores.

Officials hope their efforts will bring new life to the wine in grocery stores bill.

"We think there's a lot of momentum behind it," said Emily Ogden, director of Tennessee Kroger Wine Project. "The polling behind it is 70 percent of Tennesseans want to see this. The legislatures that I talked to on this issue say they are hearing from their constituents. And this is just an avenue for people to contact their legislatures in sort of a fun and creative way."

Rep. Steve Hall, an opponent to the bill, has told 6 News in the past he worries what it could do to small business owners.

"There are a lot of small businesses that have made a tremendous investment in the community locally owned businesses too, and I don't think we should arbitrarily disregard their investment," Hall said in March.

Efforts to change Tennessee's law to allow the sale of wine in grocery stores have failed several times.
