KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Thousands of football fans are on University of Tennessee's campus for the Vols first public practice and scrimmage.

Saturday's event was the first taste of football for UT Fans as the count down for the season opener begins.

It was also an opportunity for fans to dawn their orange and white and tailgate.

UT fans told 6 News the open practice gives them a chance to see what new head football coach Butch Jones will be bringing to the field this year.

George Massey, a Vols fan, said, "I hope the kids or the players are excited and know they've got fans that want to come out and see them play. I think that'll help down in the season when things are getting a little rough; they'll know that there's a fan base here."
