KNOXVILLE (WATE)- Thousands of fans turned out Saturday to see the Vols first open practice.

Many fans said they are excited to see what new head football coach, Butch Jones, has in store for this season.

After watching warm-ups along with a scrimmage, fans are counting down the days until kick-off.

True Tennessee fans wanted to capture every moment. Allan Ervin was taking plenty of pictures with his wife and friends, "We actually have a room just for Tennessee."

This wasn't just a practice on the field, it was a practice for fans too when it came to tailgating.

"We're playing football," said tailgaters Eli Pietrowski and Payton Webb.

The tried and true Vols fans came to support the team they grew up watching.

"One thing I do remember as an eight-year-old kid was there were fights in the stands. You don't see that in this day and time," said tailgater George Massey.

UT Freshmen Hunter Shelton and Josh Tillery said they were looking forward to seeing new plays with a new coach. "Hopefully improvement from last year," added Tillery.

Once gates opened, thousands flooded into Neyland Stadium to watch their team.

"It's good to be out here and be in the football spirit again," said fan Floyd Gibbs.

Fans said they are expecting a better season with Coach Butch Jones.

"I was really impressed by that little three-man-weave they did earlier, and it seems like they're really into it this year," added Kaye Wallace.

When the rain hit, some fans headed for cover.

"The only thing I can say is bring your poncho next time," said Wallace.

The first game is about two weeks away. Many fans said they are excited to see when those new gray uniforms will be on the field for the first time.
