No QB decision yet for Vols

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - With preseason practice winding down, the Vols appear no closer to naming a starting quarterback for their season opener against Austin Peay.

After practice on Monday, offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian said he has no hesitation if it's necessary to wait until the day before the game to name a starter.

"No, not if we have to," Bajakian said, adding that same thing happened in his previous job at Cincinnati.

Four players, including two freshmen, are in the mix for the job.

"I am not frustrated, they are all competing hard. If they were all throwing interceptions left and right and not completing any balls then I'd be worried, but they're all competing and that's a good thing."

Ultimately, the decision on a starting quarterback rests with head coach Butch Jones.

Bajakian said the players aren't distracted by the process.

"We always talk to our guys about preparing as you're the starter anyway, so it's not a big deal from their mentality and their standpoint. The thing you have to balance is the reps and how you break those up. But we've been able to distribute reps relatively evenly anyway."

"They go about their business. They're not looking over their shoulder about who is behind them or where they should be or how their reps are getting divided. They have been great in that regard."

The Vols have one practice remaining this week.

After that, it's game week-- with the season opener on Aug. 31.
