KNOXVILLE (WATE) - An ongoing road project in West Knoxville is scheduled to wrap up earlier than originally anticipated.

A Knoxville Utilities Board project forced the closure of about 1.5 miles of Lyons View Pike, causing motorists to take Interstate 40 or Kingston Pike as alternate routes.

The project was needed to upgrade natural gas, water and wastewater lines.

The combination of added vehicles and traffic lights slowed the commute on Kingston Pike during peak times.

Lyons View Pike was originally scheduled to reopen around Thanksgiving, but now KUB officials say the road will reopen about two months ahead of schedule.

The new projected completion date of late September has been added to the electronic signs at either end of the project.

Once KUB crews are finished, the City of Knoxville will move in to resurface the affected section of Lyons View Pike.
