Rep. DesJarlais defends immigration comments

NASHVILLE (WATE) - State Rep. Scott DesJarlais responded Tuesday to a viral video recorded in Murfreesboro, showing the legislator telling an 11-year-old girl that her father should be deported.

DesJairlais says he was simply being honest when the girl asked at a town hall meeting what she can do to keep her father in the country.

In the video, posted to YouTube on August 16, DesJarlais tells the girl that current immigration laws need to be followed, implying her father should be deported.

DesJarlais issued this statement on Tuesday, defending his actions:

"I felt I owed Ms. Molina an honest answer to her question. We are a nation of laws and breaking those laws have consequences. While this country has always had a generous immigration policy, we simply cannot condone individuals coming here illegally. As a Member of Congress, I strongly believe I have a responsibility to be truthful, even if that means delivering difficult news."
