NEWPORT (WATE) - A Cocke County sheriff's deputy has resigned after an FBI investigation revealed allegations he was dealing drugs.

Richard Caldwell entered a plea by information Tuesday to charges of Delivery of Schedule III, which is a felony. A plea by information means Caldwell agreed to bypass grand jury proceedings.

Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes says he was informed approximately two years ago that Caldwell was involved in illegal activity.

He says he immediately reached out to the FBI because a fellow officer was involved and wanted to ensure an unbiased investigation.

Once the facts of the investigation were presented to the sheriff by the FBI, officials confronted Caldwell. Caldwell then decided to resign from the Cocke County Sheriff's Office and enter a plea by information to the court.
