Maryville wants voters to decide on raising sales tax rate

Posted:

MARYVILLE (WATE) - Maryville City Council wants to hold a referendum on Nov. 5 to increase the sales tax rate from 9.25 to 9.75 percent.

The sales tax increase would generate an estimated $2.5 million a year.

Maryville City Manager Greg McClain says half of that would go to the city's schools, while the other half would go to the city.

The council says it would rather raise the sales tax than the property tax.

The same increase would amount to 32 cents on the property tax rate.
