WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WATE) - A Whitley County Head Start worker has been arrested and suspended after being accused of biting and spanking a child as discipline.

Police say Ginger Hackler, a worker at Bell-Whitley Head Start was charged last week with two counts of third-degree child abuse.

Officers say Hackler bit the teething toddler's left arm, leaving bite marks and bruising.

Hackler has been released from the Whitley County Detention Center on bond.

Bell/Whitley Head Start released this statement on the accusations:

"The safety of our children is the first priority of our Head Start program here at Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency, Inc. We will continue to comply with all manners of the investigation and expect it to be completed in a timely manner. The teacher in question has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. Due to confidentiality and the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation we are not free to comment any further at this time"
