KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A lucky Knoxville man will get to take a shot at a Tennessee elk in a matter of months. His name was drawn out of thousands for TWRA's annual elk hunt.

In 2009, the first time in more than 150 years, people could submit permits to take part in this elk hunt.

You could say Jimmy McDonald is doing his homework at a shooting range. That's because in two months the Knoxville native will be one of six people that get to take part in this year's Tennessee elk hunt.

"I want to make sure my gun is finely tuned. I don't want it to be off one way or the other because when I do take that shot I want to make sure it's right on," said McDonald.

Last week his name was drawn out of a pool with more than 10,000 names. "It was like winning the lottery," he said.

In October, McDonald will have five days, sunrise to sunset, to land an elk during the hunt in Rockwood, Tennessee. Until then, McDonald says has a lot of practicing to do along with forming a game plan.

"Start reading magazines, watching hunting shows, and I bought some elk calls so I'm going to start practicing them," added McDonald.

By the looks of it McDonald is right on track. He hit the target five times during practice Tuesday afternoon.

But this hunter says he's simply grateful that he's getting to be apart of history.

"It took me five years to get it and I just hope a lot of other people have the same chance," said McDonald.

All six hunters who took part in last year's elk hunt had success and were able to take home one of these animals.
