KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A week ahead of the Jewish New Year, Knoxville's Jewish Day School has introduced a ram as its a new mascot.

The unveiling began Wednesday with a symbolic blowing of a shofar.

A shofar is usually made from a ram's horn and is always blown during big Jewish holidays.

School officials said students voted to have a ram as their first ever school mascot and they got to meet him on Thursday.

"It definitely brings some energy," said Miriam Esther Wilheim, the head of the school. "It gives the school another identity. It gives the students another way to identify with the school."

Students also had the chance to make their own shofar in honor of the Jewish New Year.

Rosh Hashanah is one week from Wednesday night.
