Slide shuts down Rt. 64 in Ocoee gorge

BENTON (AP) - A rockslide in the Ocoee River gorge has shut town Highway 64, disrupting commercial rafting on the river.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has initially estimated the highway would be open by 6 p.m. Thursday. However, the slide is in the same place where a huge rockslide occurred in January 2010.

After the earlier incident, TDOT installed a catch fence and agency spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn said the mesh held back most of the new slide. However, the containment area is in danger of overflowing the fence and the rock must be removed.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported motorists using U.S. 64 face an 81-mile detour around the rockslide.
