KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Heavy rain caused the roof of a store in Knoxville's Old City to collapse early Tuesday morning.

A Knoxville police officer witnessed the collapse at Big Don the Costumier , 120 Central Street.

No injuries were reported.

The building has a flat rubber membrane covering with drains that allow the water to run off.

The Knoxville Fire Department says rain sometimes falls quicker than the drains can disperse the heavy load, which was the likely cause of the collapse.

Power to the building was disconnected to prevent a fire from occurring.

KFD said the store is unsafe to enter.

Despite those losses the owner, who wishes to be called Ramona, says the collapse is a good thing.

"I don't think of the negative. I always think of the positive and I'm really glad that it happened because now there is an impetus to really keep going," said Ramona.

Ramona has long wanted to convert the rear of her store into a theatre to host small musicals, vaudeville, and be a place for disadvantaged children to take the stage.

"I just have so much to do in there, that I want to do and I've been feeling that it's getting closer," said Ramona.

She hopes to sell most of the antique items that were kept in the back of the store and host benefits to help raise money for the theatre, a theatre she hopes will remain for many years.

The shop will continue to rent costumes by appointment only while repairs are being made. To schedule a time call (865) 525-0762 or (865) 7054027.
