KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County commissioners elected Brad Anders as commission chairman Tuesday morning.

Anders was elected by a 6-4 vote after his name was placed in nomination by Commissioner Amy Broyles.

"I'm pleased, Anders said. "I wouldn't have put my name forward if I didn't want to serve in that position."

Anders serves Knox County's 6th District and served as vice chair in 2010 and 2011.

Former Commission Chair Tony Norman had nominated R. Larry Smith (7th District).

Smith received four votes, falling short of the six needed to win.

"I wish him the best and I look forward to working with him on commission and anything I can do to be of assistance I'd be happy to," Smith said.

Smith was selected as the commission's vice chair. He is serving his last year on the county commission.

Anders said he plans to prioritize mending ties with the Knox County Schools system.

"I'll try to have an open dialogue with them and try to improve that public perception of us against them," Anders said.

Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett issued a statement after the vote congratulating Anders and Smith, saying, "I look forward to continuing to work with them and the rest of commission over the coming year."

In other commission housekeeping matters:

  • Commissioner Dave Wright (8th District) was voted as chair of committee on committees. Mike Brown (8th District) was picked as vice chair.
  • Commissioner Sam McKenzie (1st District) was voted chair of the cable TV committee. Ed Shouse (At Large, Seat 10) was named vice chair.
