KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Work is beginning on a stretch of road that gets people into and out of downtown Knoxville.

The 500 block of Gay Street is about to get a big makeover.

The block stretches from the Interstate 40 overpass to West Fifth Avenue. It is not a long stretch of street, but many drivers use it as a cut-through to get to and from the downtown area.

The road will be given a streetscapes transformation similar to what has already been done in the 300 block of Gay Street.

The work will include landscape planters, defined parking spaces, and improvements to storm water drainage.

Sidewalks will be also be improved throughout the area.

The project is expected to last about four months.

Businesses in the block will remain open, but lane closures may be in effect from time to time.

The work will be done from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday.
