Knox County seeks new internal auditor

Knox County seeks new internal auditor

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County Commission is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the vacant internal auditor position.

At a meeting of the audit committee Tuesday, members said the job will be posted through the commission's human resources department and candidates will be vetted through the audit committee. Candidates must have at least six years experience.

The committee will recommend at least three candidates to the full commission for approval.

Committee Chairman Dr. Joe Carcello is seeking a salary increase for the position, saying a higher salary will bring in more qualified candidates. The current salary is $93,000 a year.

In the interim, the committee recommended Tracy Wright to manage the internal audit office until a successor is hired.

Wright has worked as an auditor in the office for two years. She has 20 years experience working in accounting roles for companies in Kentucky before working in Knox County.

The request will go to the full commission for approval at its next meeting.

Wright will be tasked to complete an audit of the county's fixed assets, which was started by Richard Walls.

The internal auditor position became vacant after the committee voted to fire Walls in July because they were not satisfied with his work. A retirement settlement was approved last month.

Dr. Carcello told 6 News committee members looked at where he was focusing his time and unreconciled differences in audits between Walls and the auditees.

Law Director Bud Armstrong says his ongoing investigation into the audit committee's dealings with Walls should be complete within the next few days.
