Man arrested in alleged assault at Alcoa Big Lots

ALCOA (WATE) - Police in Alcoa say they have captured the suspect in an alleged assault that happened at a popular discount store late last month, thanks to a tip from the public.

Stacy Elijah Smith, 18, is charged with attempted aggravated rape following the Aug. 31 incident at Big Lots, 116 S. Hall Road.

The victim, a 53-year-old woman, said a man slipped under her stall door while she was attempting to use the store's restroom. He then tried to assault her with a hammer. The woman kicked, screamed and fought off the suspect. He then left the store.

The Alcoa Police Department released surveillance video of the incident, which led to a tip from the public.

Smith, a Maryville resident, has recently been living at Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries and is currently in the Blount County Jail.

He is also being investigated by the Knoxville Police Department in connection to other possible crimes.

 

 

 



Following the incident, Alcoa Police Department released a store video of the incident, which led to a tip from the public. Further investigation by Alcoa Police Detective Kris Sanders led to the arrest of Smith.
