NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A mother was killed after her son lost control of their vehicle and struck a tree in Hermitage late Tuesday night.

The accident happened just before 10 p.m. on Dodson Chapel Road at Fleetwood Boulevard.

Witnesses told police the driver, identified as 16-year-old Rodney Jones, was traveling southbound on Dodson Chapel Road at a high rate of speed when he encountered a slower vehicle.

He attempted to pass the driver across double yellow lines, but lost control as he was switching back into the correct lane.

The vehicle travelled off the right shoulder of the roadway, struck a fence and then a tree.  The vehicle rotated clockwise and came to rest in the middle of the roadway.

Both Jones and his mother, the passenger, identified as 38-year-old Meklit Melke, were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Jones sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Melke was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.

Neither of the victims was wearing their seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Authorities cited reckless driving as the cause of the crash.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

The teen could face charges, pending a discussion with the district attorney.
