KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Vols' new much-anticipated Smokey Gray jerseys went on sale to the public Thursday morning.

Workers at Alumni Hall made a special trip all the way to Indianapolis to pick up the new gray jerseys and worked late unloading them Wednesday night to make sure the shelves were stocked in time.

The Smokey Gray jersey has been the most anticipated item at Alumni Hall in years since Coach Butch Jones and the Vols unveiled them last month.

"We've had people call daily multiple times just to try to find out when we're getting them," said Manager Daniel Beeler. "Basically seems like every other call that comes in here is asking about the gray jerseys."

Fans were so eager, Beeler decided to open two hours early, but for some fans even that wasn't early enough.

"I've always been a true Tennessee fan, so whenever something new comes out like this, I always want to be the first one on it or try to be the first one on it," said Kevin Ferrel.

Ferrel has been a lifelong UT fan and attends every home game. He says he's also a fan of the new jerseys.

"I think the gray is a perfect color for UT," said Ferrel. "A little bit different, but brings out the excitement especially with a new coach."

The store's first order contained only a couple hundred jerseys with the numbers 74, 98 and 45 in sizes small through 4X.

They expected to be sold out by noon, but diehard fans like Ferrel didn't have to worry about that. He scored himself a jersey and grabbed a few extra for some family and friends. Now he says all that's left is to figure out which game he will wear it.

If you didn't get your hands on a jersey this time around, managers say the next shipment will not arrive until sometime next week. They also say that shipment will include kids' sizes as well.
