Michigan trooper with Knoxville ties killed in line of duty

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Michigan state trooper with ties to East Tennessee was killed in the line of duty on Monday.

Authorities say 43-year-old Trooper Paul Butterfield had pulled over a couple during a routine traffic stop in Western Michigan when he was gunned down.

Butterfield was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served with the Michigan State Police for 14 years.

He was also a UT athlete in the early 1990s as part of the track and field team that won the 1991 NCAA Championship.

He is scheduled to be buried on Saturday.
