MADISONVILLE (WATE) - Fire crews were called early Monday to put out a fire in an empty office building in downtown Madisonville.

The fire broke out in the old probation office known as the C.W. Hyatt building, located in the 100 block of College Street.

The building most recently served as offices of White, Carson and Alliman law firm. The building has been vacant for some time. The owners were in the process of renovating the building.

A county deputy called in the fire after spotting the flames while patrolling. By the time crews arrived, the second floor was nearly 50 percent involved.

"Due to it being on the second floor it made it a little hard for us to get to," said Chief John Tallent with the Madisonville Fire Department. "We made a decision since it was vacant not to put any firefighters inside to fight it so we used aerial devices from other departments."

Crews from eight different agencies and the American Red Cross were called when the fire was reported. Firefighters remained on the scene through the morning to put out hot spots.

"Because of the structure of the building its made it extremely hard to get to a lot of the hot spots," said Chief Tallent.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

The cause remains under investigation.
