KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Officials at Knox County's Shannondale Elementary School broke ground on a new expansion Monday.

Portable buildings that some students are currently housed in will be replaced.

The renovation will add almost 22,000 square feet to the facility, including 12 new classrooms, a new library, new bathrooms and more room in the cafeteria.

Principal Jack Nealy said the project is a long time in the making.

"It's going to serve as an important back drop to not only engage students in their education, but to provide the necessary tools to take this to the next level," said Principal Nealy.

Nealy said the expansion should be finished by the next school year.
