NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
A message on a church sign is turning some heads in west Nashville.
The marquee on the sign outside St. John's United Methodist Church on Charlotte Avenue reads, "Jesus had two dads and He turned out just fine."
The pastor of the church told News 2 the sign should remind everyone that Jesus wasn't only the son of God, but the son of Joseph.
"Jesus grew up in a situation where He was called the Son of Man and the Son of Joseph and it wasn't a detriment to His life," said Pastor Bill Campbell.
He continued, "For those people who have grown up or who are growing up in that situation, it is a reminder it's not insurmountable and that they can be people who have great faith and great hope and great potential as well."
Campbell told News 2 he saw the sign online when looking at other church billboards.
"I liked the idea and for me, it's about addressing the concern that children have in terms of family," he said.
Campbell said the sign is not about gay marriage or homosexuality; it's about the kids.
"It's a statement about children. It's a statement about parenting. It's a statement about our society and how we accept people and how we accept people that don't have any choice in where they live," he said, adding, "In a society where there are a lot of children who have step dads, who have foster dads and who live in blended families, it's a reminder that having two dads is okay, and it's not difficult then for them to see themselves as being successful and having a full rich life."
Campbell said he makes no apologies for the sign or how it is worded.
