GATLINBURG (WATE) - City leaders took a step towards keeping Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg.

Efforts to keep Arrowmont in Gatlinburg began when developers made an offer to the owners of the property. The developers wanted to turn the land into a giant entertainment complex.

Tuesday evening, the City Commission voted unanimously to pass a resolution giving $3.5 million to Arrowmont. The money will be used to purchase the land the school sits on.

There will be a second reading of the resolution at a later date before the resolution can be made final. There must also be an approval of a conservation easement. In addition, Arrowmont must still raise additional funds and further negotiate with the developer.
