ROGERSVILLE (WATE) - A former Hawkins County jail guard was charged Wednesday morning with the February assault of an inmate.

Roy Junior Mathes, 37, was indicted on one count of assault and booked into the Hawkins County Jail.

The 3rd Judicial District Attorney General was asked to investigate an alleged incident that happened on February 23 between Mathes and an inmate.

The inmate, Lloyd Gibson, 24, of Johnson City, was in jail for failure to appear in court on previous charges when he was removed from his cell due to his involvement in a vandalism incident.

During the removal, Mathes is accused of pushing Gibson's body, causing Gibson to strike his head on at least one jail door.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation assisted with the investigation.

Mathes was terminated from his position.
