CUMBERLAND GAP (WATE) - A Claiborne County teacher was arrested in Kentucky Tuesday on federal drug charges.

Court documents show Sherrill King, 44, was charged with conspiracy to distribute painkiller oxycodone and anti-anxiety drug Xanax over the course of 10 years.

The documents say King committed the offenses in Bell County, Ky. along with other locations from 2003 until the present.

Claiborne County Assistant Director of Schools Bob Oakes said King is an employee of the school system and has been placed on suspension.

The school system's website identifies King as a driver's education teacher and a former basketball coach at Cumberland Gap High School.

Students say King's arrest was a hot topic in the hallways Wednesday as news spread of the ordinarily friendly teacher's arrest.

One parent told 6 News King was a great teacher for her son who took his driving class and was shocked by the charges.

King is currently being held in the Laurel County, Ky. Correctional Center.
