KNOXVILLE (WATE) - We're learning more about the background of a school staffer arrested in an altercation with a student.

Gary Hamilton, an In-School-Suspension (ISS) instructional assistant at Fulton High School, was charged with simple assault Monday.

The nearly 300 pound man was involved in an altercation with a 14 year old about half his weight.

Knox County Schools released his personnel file on Wednesday, which reveals Hamilton bounced around from working at three different Knox County high schools in a little more than a year.

Hamilton was placed on paid administrative leave after getting into an alleged shoving match with a 14 year old student. Each claims they were punched by the other.

Hamilton's file also reveals he played college and semi-professional football and coached the game for more than 20 years in Virginia.

Hamilton has worked at Fulton High School since September 2012.

Before that, he was a Special Education Teaching Assistant at Gibbs High School for just three weeks in August 2012 before resigning for personal reasons.

Hamilton held the same position at Hardin Valley Academy for two months in the spring of 2012 before transferring to Gibbs.

Before moving to Knox County, Hamilton was an assistant football coach at Tabb High School in the York County School system in Virginia in 2011.  6 News stopped by Hamilton's home in the Halls area, but nobody was home.

6 News contacted the York County School system, but a school official said it's policy to not discuss or release personnel records.
