KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Students at two Knoxville elementary schools got the chance to meet Subway spokesman Jared Fogle Thursday in an effort to encourage healthy diets.

Fogle, best known for appearing in Subway commercials, spoke to third, fourth and fifth graders at Christenberry Elementary School as part of the sandwich chain's "Fit for Life" campaign.

He formerly weighed more than 450 pounds, but changed his life with healthy eating habits and exercise, which he partly credits to eating Subway sandwiches.

Fogle shared his story with the students Thursday, hoping to encourage not only healthy eating habits, but also overall fitness.

"I think we all know that childhood obesity is at an epidemic level. We seem to know it's a problem, but we don't have too many solutions. So the folks at subway came up with this idea as a way to help kids come up with healthier habits," said Fogle.

Fogle also appeared at Mooreland Heights Elementary School.

Each school is receiving a $500 grant to buy fitness equipment. The "Fit for Life" campaign has been introduced in schools all over the country.
