KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Knox County Sheriff's Office and AT&T shared an important message Thursday to those who text and drive: it can wait.

The two groups held a pledge event in Market Square to discourage distracted drivers.

Organizers of the event say texting while driving isn't limited to young drivers. They want to share the message with busy adults as well.

"We are so conditioned with technology. We expect a response in just a matter of minutes from a text or email message. There's peer pressure and business pressure. People are so busy with time and trying to multi-task," said Allen Hill, AT&T regional director.

Organizers say around 1,000 crashes per year are due to texting and driving, and many of those are fatal.
